Incorrect total document count shown

I'm a new dev working at Big Local News on the Agenda Watch platform. I recently noticed that the results count is displaying incorrectly in the Document Cloud UI. This is not a critical issue by any means, but I wanted to flag to you all (cc-ed Serdar for visibility).

The issue seems to come up when I've recently deleted documents from a project via the API - see bottom right Showing 55 of 39 Results. The counts seems to resolve after a few hard refreshes of the page, which makes me think it's possibly a caching or latency thing.

I am unsure if the issue is originating on the frontend or backend
