Clicking in search field crashes the app

As the title says, if I click in the Search field, the app crashes (at least, it vanishes from the screen; I cannot seem to find anything like a crash log for it).

If I run the app from Xcode and click in the Search field, the Xcode console says

Unable to obtain a task name port right for pid 459: (os/kern) failure (0x5)

But I have no idea what means; I think it just means we crashed.

Choosing a menu item also crashes the app. This is a pity because I would like to uncheck Always In Front and I can't, the app crashes as I try to select that menu item. This might be related to the console's many complaints about the menus being "inconsistent".

Oooo oooo! I figured out it's not actually a crash. It's the problem with the menus, probably. The source of the trouble is that clicking in the search field somehow trigger a call to windowWillClose, and of course then we hit the line NSApp.terminate. So we're not crashing; the app is committing suicide.
