Distributing SEB through MDM on managed Macs? #548

Our school has in the last few years switched from an open to a managed Mac environment with Lightspeed MDM. The test-providers we use all launch SEB using seb://-links that do the configuration. So far we've had students do manual installation (download .dmg→ drag .app to Applications folder). But this has been nightmare. Multiple copies being the main issue, but also, dragging to the desktop, opening the app rather than dragging. Students are inventive. So I want us to move to an MDM-solution for installation. Since all we're doing thus far is dragging it to the applications folder, I would assume that the MDM just has to put the app-file in the applications folder, no? Any additional config is done by the config-files our students open, right? Is there any reason copying it that way wouldn't work? Whenever I check the support documents, there's an awful lot of talk about managing the configuration, but since we don't really do that and have no in-house test system to config to, that seems superfluous to us. Or am I missing something? |

Yes, you just need to deploy (copy) the Safe Exam Browser app into the Applications folder, just as when manually copying it from the disk image (it seems nowadays many users own Macs and haven't understood the basics of using apps on macOS). Some institutions in the past preferred to use client configurations, plus some might use managed devices, although this is likely rarely the case with Macs. Some may want to prevent that the safeexambrowser.org/start page is displayed if students start SEB directly instead of using a sebs:// link. |
