a group of students wants to use this on a group project.
Does this api still work etc?

Hi, same issue here. But as per the docs, the api is being hosted for free on Heroku, and Heroku ended it's free tier in Novermber 2022 so that's probably the reason this has stopped working. It's a wait and see situation to see if she moves the codebase to a different plaform.
She has opened up the code so you can probably fork it and host it elsewhere if you really wanted to.
