Question about testing complex models themselves

Do you perhaps have any ideas or tips to share about writing tests for complex models - for example keeping track of complex morphologies, especially when changing coordinate systems and/or adding stimulation. Are there ways of implementing automated tests that don't rely on visual inspection?
