should the setup.py process change to create a wheel instead of egg

Still getting up to speed with tidy, well versioned projects but as I was setting up a project using the outlined method, I saw that the setup.py recommended creates an egg.info instead of a wheel? Is this still the best method, from my stackoverflowing I saw that .egg was being replaced by wheel, does this section of the guide need to be updated?
