Align internal and public app versioning using semantic versioning #874

The feature request
The app has an internal build version number (e.g. 1.0.8978.16678) that differs from the public version (e.g. v1.0.9). It would be good to align these and adopt a clearer versioning format.
Proposed solution
Adopt a consistent major.minor.patch versioning format based on semantic versioning
