VM root window resize failure - Fedora 42 KDE, X11

Describe the bug

I'm unable to resize the root window of freshly installed Fedora Workstation 42 KDE running on Windows 10 host under VMWare Workstation 17.5.2 if the session is X11 (open-vm-tools-desktop is installed). I can set the screen resolution I need (usually 1920x1200), but it does not change when the VMware window is resized. This does not happen in a Wayland session (but I do not want to use Wayland because of the lagging cursor).
