Device not visible after flashing SPARK MAX firmware on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with RHC2

System: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS

After flashing the SPARK MAX that is on an older firmware (25.04, whatever 24.xx.xx version it was running before didn't even show up on linux) with RHC2 by putting it in DFU mode, it no longer shows up on the device list in RHC2 in normal mode. The LEDs are flashing as they normally do, but still nothing shows up. On Windows, the device is recognized, but clicking on it crashes RHC2. Putting the SPARK MAX in DFU mode and flashing it on Windows results in the device showing in the device tree and working properly. When flashing with dfu-util on Windows, the SPARK MAX is still visible and working properly. Switching back over to Linux, the device works properly and is viewable in RHC2, but upon trying to reflash with both RHC2 and dfu-util, the device is no longer visible in RHC2. The following dfu-util command was used dfu-util -a 0 -n <device-num> -D "/path/to/file".

You may need to add a udev rule for the device to be detected. Please add the following to a new file named /etc/udev/rules.d/95-dfu.rules:

After saving the rule (you need sudo access to write the file), and unplugging/re-plugging the device, updating should work.

I may be misunderstanding, but I don't have an issue with recognizing the device in DFU mode. I can see the device with both dfu-util and with RHC2 when it is in dfu mode. After the flashing succeeds, unplugging and replugging in the device, and restarting the hardware client, RHC2 still cannot find any devices. I already had libusb-1.0.0-dev installed, and adding the rule file did not have any effect. Something is definitely different about the flashing on both operating systems (the one flashed on linux crashes RHC2 on windows), I don't think there are permission issues with DFU mode.

The following output is from me:

• Launching RHC2 through the terminal.
• Plugging in the SPARK MAX in DFU mode.
• Selecting SPARK MAX as the device type and flashing.
• Switching tabs a couple times once flashing is complete.
• Removing the SPARK MAX and plugging it back in.
• Closing RHC2

It does seem to have trouble opening something on port 13, as that almost filled the entirety of my terminal history lol.

Does unplugging the device and plugging back it in yield any results? Those errors are from trying to open the port and it failing and retrying. You may need to reconnect it a couple times.

No, the UI does not display anything. Like I said earlier, while the lights on the SPARK MAX appear to be correctly working after being flashed in Linux there still appears to be something wrong with whatever is being flashed on Linux. If it were just a permission issue on Linux, it would be strange for selecting the device to crash RHC2 on Windows, and would be even stranger that the version flashed on Windows would work just fine on Linux.

I am not able to reproduce this currently (I can DFU a MAX from Ubuntu without issue and view it on 0.2.2). Can you check the following:

1. DFU the MAX again and unplug/re-plug
2. run lsusb in a terminal
3. run ls /dev | grep spark

I see the following, for example:

I am on RHC 0.2.2 and I have flashed it with 26.0.0-prerealease.2. Running lsusb results in Bus 003 Device 007: ID 0483:a30e STMicroelectronics SPARK MAX Motor Controller and running ls /dev | grep spark results in spark0. Nothing shows up in RHC2 on linux on prerelease 2, but if I flash an old firmware it detects an outdated firmware.

I decided to go over the same steps as I did in the original on RHC2 0.2.2 and discovered some fun behavior. The SPARK MAX remains powered while my computer restarts (this will be relevant). Unless specified the SPARK MAX was not unplugged.

• Flashing on Ubuntu and booting into Windows no longer results in clicking on the SPARK MAX crashing RHC2, at least as of 0.2.2.
• Flashing again on Windows and booting back into Ubuntu results in the SPARK MAX being viewable in RHC2.
• Flashing on Ubuntu again results in the SPARK MAX disappearing from RHC2 again, but restarting makes it viewable.
• Flashing with dfu-util on Ubuntu, then restarting without starting RHC2 does not result in the SPARK MAX showing up in RHC2, but upon restarting again, it does show up.
• When it is visible in RHC2 on Ubuntu, unplugging and plugging the device back in results in it no longer being visible in RHC2. No combination of opening and closing RHC or removing power and applying power results in it being visible again.
• Flashing, unplugging the SPARK MAX, restarting, and plugging in the SPARK MAX on Ubuntu does not result in the SPARK MAX being visible, but restarting again without removing power does.
• When the SPARK MAX is visible on Windows 11, closing RHC2 and reopening does not result in the SPARK MAX disappearing, but it does take an abnormally long time to close, if it closes at all (just turns grey).
• After flashing the firmware on Ubuntu and booting into Windows, the SPARK MAX is visible no matter how many times it is unplugged and plugged back in. This behavior persists after flashing it on Windows.
• After booting back into Ubuntu, the SPARK MAX exhibits all of the same behavior as when it is flashed on Ubuntu. I would speculate that this means any difference in the state of the SPARK MAX after it was flashed between operating systems has disappeared between 0.2.0 and 0.2.2.
