When a 3D image has a thickness of 1 (pixel) along one of the dimensions (imageSize[i] == 1), just avoided Gaussian smoothing along that dimension.

@stefanklein @mstaring What do you think of this approach? Just skipping any dimension which has only 1 pixel thickness in that direction...?
